2023 Kia Niro Overview
Kia’s original vision for the Niro was to provide customers with a compelling small crossover SUV that can be had with either a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric powertrain. It did take some time to get there. The PHEV followed a year behind the hybrid and the EV a year after that. Now, the automaker is set to introduce the 2023 Kia Niro, which ushers in the second generation. Kia is not only offering the three core options out of the gate, it has introduced a style that is sleeker and more modern. It has also made the cabin roomier and more upscale and expanded the standard and optional tech and amenities.

The wheelbase and overall length of the Niro have been increased as well, and that was necessary to add the desired space to the cabin. While the footprint is bigger, it’s not a dramatic difference. All models available at our dealership serving Fort Myers Cape Coral Naples Port Charlotte share the same exterior design, and the aesthetic has been completely overhauled for the new model year as well. The lines are sleeker and more modern, and there are new well designs in addition to new exterior colors.

As mentioned in the introduction, a goal with the Niro is to deliver a consistent cabin experience regardless of which powertrain you choose. That means that the headroom, legroom and cargo space are the same in the models discussed above. Final interior specifications were not yet available at the time of this writing, but we do know that headroom, legroom and cargo space have all been increased.

Kia has designed the Niro with front-wheel drive for the improved range. The EV has a single-speed automatic transmission. The Hybrid and PHEV have a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Niro Hybrid has a 1.6L four-cylinder engine paired with a 32-kw electric motor: 139 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The Niro PHEV has the 1.6L four but paired with a 11.1-kWh battery pack and 62-kW motor. This setup combines for 180 hp and 195 lb.-ft. The Niro EV has a 64.8-kWh battery pack and 150-kW motor, and this is the most powerful combination at 201 hp and 188 lb.-ft.

Each model has a 10.25-inch color HD touch screen with advanced features like navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. Most of the advanced driver assists are standard, including frontal collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, a blind-spot monitor and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. There will be an optional semi-autonomous driving mode.
Kia Niro Hybrid
The Kia Niro Hybrid provides 53 mpg, which is superior to just about every other hybrid on the market. Our location serving Fort Myers Cape Coral Naples Port Charlotte will offer it in four trim levels—LX, X-Line, EX and SX—which is more than are available with the PHEV and EV. It is likely that Kia expects this to be the top-seller of the 2023 Kia Niro lineup and wants to ensure that it appeals to a wider base.
Kia Niro PHEV
The Kia Niro PHEV is available from Galeana Kia in the EX and SX trim levels, and those packages do not cost significantly more than their Hybrid counterparts. The PHEV and Hybrid share the same four-cylinder engine, but the PHEV adds a battery pack and a more powerful electric motor. A notable characteristic of the PHEV is that it can drive up to 33 miles using no gas at all.
Kia Niro NV
The 2023 Kia Niro EV has an all-electric powertrain that gives you over 250 miles of range on a single charge. What is notable about this is that Kia has traditionally been very conservative on this front. The previous model, for instance, was introduced at 238 miles but could actually reach 285. Kia has also improved charging, and you can now fully charge your vehicle with a Level 2 charger in under 3 hours.
